The Wonderful World of the Beatrix Potter Books
The delightful world of Beatrix Potter books will surely transport any child to the world of magic and fantasy. I am yet to come across any child who doesn’t enjoy reading these tales. Why only children?
These books can prove to be a constant source of joy to any adult too. And I’m not just talking about the stories but the illustrations are charming too. They bring constant joy to the kids. If you have been invited to a child’s birthday and you are wondering what to give as a gift you can choose Beatrix Potter books without hesitation.
All the characters are adorable and are full of life. The themes of these books are also very interesting. Each story has an interesting moral without being too preachy on the young minds. Children can learn from these books that it is not wise to be disobedient and usually get so engrossed in these tales that they automatically follow the morals. These books usually deal with animal stories. Benjamin Bunny, Peter Rabbit and Little Pig Robinson are immortal characters that have been a source of joy and delight to children of several generations.
Moreover, the stories in Beatrix Potter books are sometimes about real people and places and so most of them have an introduction where the author delves into the history of that particular tale. Many of Potter’s stories are about small animals, we know that Potter lived in the English Lake District and she was extremely fond of animals. She had a lot of pets and at times she also smuggled small animals into the house. Her love for animals is well reflected in her stories.
She first started writing when she was 27 and her governess encouraged her to get her books published. Thus Peter Rabbit was born. Beatrix Potter books became so popular that soon Peter Rabbit became every child’s favorite soft toy. Soon after the tale of Squirrel Nutkin and Little Pig Robinson were published.
Originally all the books were published using different colored covers. In the 1930’s all the 23 books were published as small books, and in the 1940’s they were first published with the white covers that we see them in these days. In 2002 Peter Rabbit celebrated its centenary and the Beatrix Potter books were now reprinted in the way she intended them to be.
Gardens formed the backdrop of many of Beatrix Potter’s books and we at times find that she illustrated the books from an animal’s view point, or what an animal would find appealing. Like lettuces, beans and red brick walls. Moreover in her sketches, the beauty and colors of the English countryside is well captured.
These books are easily available and have also been translated into quite a few languages. You can also find bags, badges, cups and soft toys of the characters which I am sure every child will enjoy having. So rush to your nearest book store and give your child a special treat. The entire range of Beatrix Potter books can also be ordered online.
