I love touring Italy – Cinque Terre, Liguria
If you are looking for a European tourist destination, considers the region of Liguria in northern Italy known as the Italian Riviera. This narrow strip of land is in the Ligurian Sea, near Monaco and Cote d'Azur. While Liguria is by no means undiscovered, its crowds are much smaller than the others. There are many small towns and villages, and international port city almost in the middle of the coast. This article explores the Cinque Terre, five small coastal villages that could steal your heart. Remember not to read other articles in this series: Eastern Liguria, western Liguria and Genoa, the capital and largest city of Liguria.
As its name suggests, Cinque Terre is a group of five villages of the East Coast Liguria. Together, they form the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Going from west to east are their names Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore y. If you walk in the five cities will probably be the way it works in reverse order, because the best way roads to the west. You can always take a train to go to villages. Do not be a hero and spoil your stay.
The villages are connected by several paths, some of which have evolved from trail riding. Most Popular Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) that borders water. It is 8 miles (13 kilometers) long and is said to take about five hours. Do not worry if it takes longer and longer. I said before and I'll say it again, and not be a hero and spoil your stay.
Monterosso al Mare population of about 1500, is the largest and most active of these five villages. Stone steps take you from downtown to the harbor and the promenade. Monterosso al Mare is surrounded by hills decorated in vines and olive. Thursday is market day and the wings of the market for local crafts and food and wine. The old bell Aurora separates the parties and the modern village. This is the only tower of the thirteen surrounding the city in the sixteenth century.
Be sure to see the twelfth century Chiesa di San Francesco (Church of San Francisco). This church was built in the Gothic figure, like many other features in black and white marble. The Church proudly displays an image of the Crucifixion attributed the painter Van Dyck's English who has lived for six years in Liguria. The city is the scene of lemon (Saturday just before Ascension Sunday) Flores (Second Sunday after Pentecost), and even salted anchovies and olive oil (second weekend in September).
Vernazza provides the only port These five villages becomes more natural and richer than their neighbors. Therefore, their architecture is more complex. Vernazza is a facility has been strategically important during Roman times the maritime republics of Genoa. He was also famous for its carpenters. Be sure to see Castle of Doria, the watch towers, and Romanesque sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Reggio (Reggio Notre Dame).
Corniglia, a farming town, is the most remote villages of the Cinque Terre and the only one not directly on the sea and is planned to build a lift station, until that happens, you must conquer to get to 337 steps in 33 flights of stairs. Once there, be sure to check the fourteenth century church of San Pedro (San Pedro) built in Gothic-Ligurian. Corniglia was mentioned in Boccaccio's Decameron. If a local castle was mentioned way back to the late thirteenth century, no one has found the ruins. We invite you to watch.
Manarola is the center of the wine lands and the oil industry olive. What a feast of colors: the houses are pastel, water color is turquoise, and the rock on which lies the city is black. Remember to check the path dell'Amore (Love Road) connecting Manarola to Riomaggiore, said to provide some of the most fascinating landscapes world. The miles of road (one mile) long, was carved into the rock overlooking the sea is what is called a labor of love.
Riomaggiore is the most accessible way, the least charm of the five villages. The village can be attributed to the eighth century, when it was founded by a group of Greek refugees who fled religious persecution of the Byzantine Emperor. The fourteenth century parish church of San Giovanni Battista (John Baptist) dominates the village. Be sure to see the ruins of a sixteenth century castle-XV.
What about food? Liguria is famous for its pesto claimed to be the best in the world. It is very easy to do, take a mortar and basil combine basil, Liguria, olive oil, pine nuts, garlic and Parmesan. Do not break the heart of Liguria certainly not do it in the blender. Serve with fresh pasta. And do not forget the wine Liguria.
Let's suggest a sample menu, one of many. Start Ciuppin (fish soup). Then try Ligure Arrosto went Coniglio (rabbit roast) to the Baci di relax with dessert Dami literally kisses the ladies (almond cookies with dark chocolate.) sure to increase your pleasure eating by including local wines with their food.
We'll conclude with a look on the wine of Liguria. Liguria is very low and did not much room for wine grapes. It ranks 19th among the 20 Italian regions for acreage devoted to vineyards and the total production of wine per year. About 34% of its red wine or rose, leaving 66% white. The region produces eight wines DOC. DOC designation means controlled, which can be translated as Denomination of Origin Controlled, probably a high quality wine. Approximately 14% of Ligurian wine carries the DOC designation.
Cinque Terre / Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà (DOC) is the only DOC wine Cinque Terre area. It is a dry white wine or soft based on a variety of local grapes. Even the wines are not as spectacular as the vines pruned into the rock thousands of years ago. You need to go to Liguria or perhaps neighboring regions of Italy to taste one of them. In fact, there are many reasons to visit this beautiful region.
